The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on Monday announced the launch of Open Data Week to encourage the adoption of open data and promote innovation in the Indian urban ecosystem.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, ahead of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – Smart Cities: Smart Urbanization” conference to be held in Surat in February 2022, the Open Data Week is part of a series of pre-event initiatives undertaken by MoHUA to promote awareness and use of open data.

It will take place during the third week of January, from January 17, 2022 to January 21, 2022, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, the event will see the participation of the 100 smart cities who will publish high-quality datasets and data blogs on the smart cities open data portal. Currently, more than 3,800 datasets and more than 60 data stories are already available on the portal for various stakeholders to analyze this data and discover actionable insights.

The event aims to show the benefits of open data such as increased efficiency, transparency, boosting innovation and economic growth. It is divided into two segments – first, the upload of datasets, visualizations, APIs and data blogs to the smart cities open data portal from January 17, 2022 to January 20, 2022 and second, the celebration of data by all smart cities on January 21, 2022, the ministry said.

He further said that the data day will be held nationwide in all smart cities and will include conferences, seminars, hackathons, demonstrations and trainings on different data tracks identified by the cities. The Day will see the engagement of people from different backgrounds, including government agencies, private sector companies, scientific and academic institutions, businesses, start-ups, civil society, and more.

The idea is to provide a platform that offers many opportunities on how to continue to create and promote the use of data that addresses complex urban issues, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, said the Ministry.

He further said that the event was designed to promote data usage and awareness. Many groups of people and organizations can also benefit from the availability of quality data. New combinations of data can create new insights and insights, which can lead to whole new areas of application. This can help governments address some of the most common issues faced by citizens in any city and replicate successful ideas in other cities.

The 100 smart cities are all set for the event, making it a collaborative effort to make Indian cities ‘Data Smart’, he added.
