Blockchain Research Institute (BRI) is a global blockchain think tank that has expanded its work on the continent through cooperation with one of Africa’s largest banks, Standard Bank.
The partnership introduced BRI Africa which brings together academics, policy makers, entrepreneurs and researchers to undertake ground-breaking research on blockchain technology, bridging the gap between blockchain technology functionality and real market needs.
As such, the institution is working on over 100 projects with the aim of identifying strategic opportunities, challenges, and implications of blockchain technology in business, government, and society.
As part of attempts to disseminate the knowledge gathered across the country, part of the Think Tank’s role will be to provide a range of educational deliverables in the form of webinars, books, conferences. The institute will also offer a Online course, a BRI collaboration with INSEAD, Europe’s top business school, and Coursera, the largest online education platform.

While financial institutions have primarily been told not to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions, the continent’s big banks are aware of the potential of cryptocurrencies – and it’s no surprise that the largest bank in Africa by Assets be keen to unlock the potential of crypto in Africa.
According to Blockchain head Ian Putter, the bank is considering blockchain to improve speed and transparency.

The think tank also encourages business ideas centered around blockchain technologies through the Africa Blockchain Incubation program. According to BRI Africa, the program, which is currently open to Egypt and Zimbabwe, offers resources for new founders to use to launch and grow a startup.
